Central Carolina Community College, like many of its peers, was experiencing student retention challenges due to disconnected communication and a lack of best practices. The college needed a comprehensive program that would help administrators and guidance staff better understand and respond to student setbacks on a proactive, rather than reactive, basis.
Aviso Retention partnered with Central Carolina to establish predictive data that helps identify student risks sooner, and provided hands-on coaching to respond to and reverse student attrition based on the data insights. After just 24 months, the college saw dramatic improvement: student retention increased 13%.
Central Carolina leadership championed the project, which encouraged faculty and staff to embrace the opportunity. The program was quickly adopted and integrated into the college’s existing LMS, SIS and financial aid systems.
The combination of Aviso’s proven coaching techniques, early alert software use of predictive analytics allowed Central Carolina staff to identify at-risk students and intervene dramatically faster and more effectively.
The program was funded by a five-year, $1.6 million Title-III Strengthening Institutions Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education to maximize student access and success.
Aviso’s effective processes have become integrated into Central Carolina’s core business practices, described by the college as a “cultural mindshift.” It empowered employees to take a much more active role in persistence initiatives.
Based on the program’s success, a total of 10 North Carolina community colleges are now implementing the Aviso Retention system, funded in part by a First in the World (FITW) grant established to validate the impact of success coaching in the region. This represents nearly 20 percent of the state’s community college institutions.
